In a landmark moment for Muay Thai, Buakaw was part of the International Federation of Muay Thai Associations’ (IFMA) efforts to showcase the sport at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Buakaw led a traditional Muay Thai demonstration in a specially constructed stadium at Club France. The event featured workshops and exhibitions with athletes from 24 countries, including Thailand, and ran from July 26 to August 11, 2024.

Born on May 8, 1982, as Sombat Banchamek in Surin, Thailand, Buakaw began his Muay Thai journey at the age of eight. By fifteen, he had already clinched multiple titles, including his first featherweight belt at Omnoi Stadium. His career skyrocketed in December 2002 when he won the prestigious Lumpinee Boxing Stadium tournament, defeating the renowned Satoshi Kobayashi.
Buakaw gained international fame in 2004 after winning the K-1 MAX World Grand Prix tournament in Japan, where he delivered a series of electrifying performances against top-tier opponents like John Wayne Parr, Takayuki Kohiruimaki, and Masato. This victory catapulted him to worldwide acclaim and solidified his reputation as one of the best fighters in the world.
Memorable Fights and Legacy
Buakaw’s career is decorated with many memorable bouts. In 2007, he faced Masato once again at the K-1 World MAX, where he lost by unanimous decision. However, Buakaw’s resilience shone through in 2009 when he defeated Andre Dida in the K-1 World MAX Finals, delivering a dominating performance.
Among his most notable fights was his encounter with Saenchai, another of Thailand’s legendary fighters. In 2022, Buakaw faced rising star Kota Miura at Rajadamnern Stadium, where his powerful kicks and punches captivated fans worldwide.
While fans eagerly anticipated the “Match of Legends” between Buakaw and Manny Pacquiao, originally scheduled for April 2024, the fight was indefinitely postponed. Addressing the situation, Buakaw remarked, “My understanding is that the fight has gotten postponed. It hasn’t been cancelled.”
